How It All Started: The Story Behind the Super Smart Uniforms
Every story has a beginning.
For M. Samuels, it started in 1999, at the Nigerian Law School.
At the time, fashion retailing was simply a way to survive. I started selling clothes while in law school, and in 2000, the same year I was called to the Nigerian Bar, that small hustle grew into a full store ASHERS CLOTHELINE.
But something changed along the way.
What started as survival slowly opened my eyes to something bigger: business was not just about selling. It was about seeing opportunities, creating cash flow, solving problems, meeting needs and, most importantly, finding better ways to get things done.
By 2004/2005, I had started travelling in and out of different garment factories in China.
And honestly, it was impressive.
These factories could produce 10,000 suits in a week β and even more when pushed. The organisation, speed and scale were something else.
I thought I had simply found the perfect place to support my retail business.
I didn't know I had actually signed up for a master class in garment production.
Then I Started Asking One Questionβ¦
Why couldn't we do some of this in Nigeria?
It wasn't because the average Nigerian entrepreneur wasn't smart or hardworking. In fact, I met some of the most hardworking and resourceful people right here at home.
The difference was the system around them.
China had infrastructure. Reliable power. Access to capital. Manufacturing systems that made it easier to turn an idea into reality.
And I kept thinking about Nigeria.
Naija was on my mind.
I wanted to see more of these things happen here.
Then 2020 happened.
COVID came, and suddenly, everything changed.
The world practically shut down overnight. Businesses stopped. Movement became difficult. Supply chains were disrupted, and China remained largely shut for a long period.
For someone whose business depended heavily on imported garments, we had a serious problem.
There was no waiting around for things to return to normal.
We had to look inwards.
That Was the Turning Point
We had to act fast.
We had to innovate.
We had to figure out how to produce in Nigeria.
And that became one of the best decisions I've made.
I honestly didn't know if we could do it.
But we did.
For the first time, it felt like we had taken our power back.
Of course, there is still a lot we cannot produce here as quickly or as easily as we would like. There are still challenges. But we have come a long way.
And we're enjoying every part of the journey.
And That Was the Beginning of M. Samuels
